As every contractor knows, construction and demolition produces a lot of waste. In fact, according to the County of Maui, Maui alone generated over 300,000 tons of C&D waste in 2006. This number is bound to increase for the foreseeable future as we see steadily increasing development on the island.

So what do we do with all of that debris?

Construction and demolition waste includes materials like concrete, asphalt, rocks, soil, asbestos, etc. This waste can either be dumped into the landfill or recycled into aggregate and other usable materials.

Environmental sustainability is a big deal for us at Malama Junk Removal, so we always recycle as much C&D waste as possible. We highly encourage you to do the same by bringing your debris to Hawaii Materials Recycling in Kihei. They recycle concrete, asphalt, dirt, and sand into usable materials such as road base, pipe bedding, wall rock, top soil, and more. This allows us to give construction debris a second life and prevents the landfill from overfilling. You will want to call ahead for hours of operation and to make sure they accept your type of material. You can also give us a call, as we are happy to help you with your construction debris needs.

Dumping

The process is more complicated at the Central Maui Landfill. However, they accept more types of waste than Hawaii Materials Recycling. For commercial construction, you will need to fill out a form describing the jobsite, contractor, waste transporter, and type of waste. The form also has details on which hours they accept waste, size limitations, unacceptable material, etc. Upon completion, you must email or mail the form to the Central Maui Landfill Office. After up to 7 business days for processing, the office will mail you a copy of the form along with your “C&D number”. This C&D number is valid for 6 months and you must be ready to present it every time you dump. More information is available on the Maui County website.

Now that you’re educated on how to properly recycle and dispose of your construction and demolition waste, you can tackle your construction job while protecting our island and reducing the amount of waste in our landfill.
